How Mental & Emotional Imbalances Affect the Physical Body
Our physical body is a manifestation of our consciousness. The condition of our body can help us understand the state of our consciousness.
Science has proven that our thoughts and emotions affect our physical body. In the metaphysical healing world, there is a belief that physical dis-ease and imbalance is a manifestation of the pain and trauma stored in the mental and emotional bodies, whether from this current life or from past lives.
The belief is that these mental and emotional imbalances are the deepest root cause that needs to be addressed in order to have permanent healing of the dis-eased condition. To heal the body, you must focus on mental, emotional and physical healing. It is important to resolve the imbalances on ALL fronts.
Have you ever wondered why a person does so much to heal their body, is successful, but eventually they get sick again, potentially even worse than before? These are usually the people that we see approaching and living life the same way they always have. (I say usually/typically because life is not so black and white and there are exceptions to every rule.)
What about the people that you have seen heal their body and the dis-eased condition never comes back? These are the people that typically have transformed how they live their life, which is a simple way of saying, they healed on a deeper level, both mentally and emotionally, not just physically.
For permanent healing to happen, the root cause of the imbalance in the mental and emotional bodies must be addressed.
What is Consciousness?
How I define consciousness: the whole and total makeup of our being and all that is contained within our soul. This includes: the imprints of past lives and our current lifetime, beliefs and emotions, what we fear and Love, purpose, potential and all of the duality that makes up you.
Cultivating conscious awareness of these parts of you can lead to permanent healing. You cannot do anything about what you do not know. This is done through uncovering the fears, pain emotions, judgements and limiting beliefs that feed your unhealed parts and keep them alive.
Love and harmony is the natural state of our consciousness. It is our unhealed parts that knock us out of alignment. The more we transform our pain and fear, the more embodied we become in our most harmonious state.
For permanent healing, it is vital that we understand the layers of consciousness, the function that each layer plays and their relationship with one another. This will help us understand how dis-ease occurs and how we can heal it at the root: mentally, emotionally, physically and spiritually.
Layers of Consciousness
Physical Body
This is the vehicle through which our consciousness expresses itself. It is the reflection and manifestation of our etheric body and consciousness. What is in disharmony in our etheric body will show up in the physical body.
To gain an understanding of what is out of alignment in your body, look at the chakra area that is being affected to best determine what it represents.
For example: let’s say in a past life you lost a limb and never healed mentally or emotionally from that traumatic event. Because those unhealed parts are still present in your consciousness, it is possible that you could be born with a missing limb in this current lifetime. To understand conditions that we are born with, or that manifest as small children, look to the trauma carried over from past lives. Past Life Regression Therapy is a great modality for this.
For a current life example: let’s look at breast cancer. This manifests in the heart chakra, so we know there is a deeper wound related to matters of the heart. Every client I have personally worked with that has had breast cancer, had wounds around RECEIVING Love. They have been women that give at great cost to themselves, without receiving at the level they are giving.
When there is an imbalance of giving and receiving Love, this can manifest in the heart chakra with issues related to the heart, breasts or lungs. A person who struggles with this balance is being driven by some underlying, and likely unconscious wound, pain or trauma, that taught them that’s who they have to be in order to get Love or feel safe.
Etheric Body
This is the layer closest to the physical body that gives it life and acts as its protective shell. It is a complex part of our consciousness that contains energetic organs, bones, blood, etc.
In its most harmonious state, the etheric body maintains the physical body’s state of well-being.
When tears, holes and leaks form here, life force energy escapes the physical body and creates the possibility for dis-ease to manifest.
The pain and fear stored in the mental and emotional bodies is what creates the stress on the etheric body that tears holes into it.
Energy healing modalities can be used to restore balance and harmony to the etheric body but the effects will be temporary without the transformation of the mental and emotional bodies.
Emotional Body
This is the layer where our feelings and emotional energy is stored. This is the home of our inner child. Our emotional body pulls at and creates tension on the mental body when it is in pain. Here is where the pain from trauma is stored and where we see emotional dysregulation. How the emotional body expresses itself depends on whether a person is in an active or passive expression of their pain.
Active expression is when we see a person who projects and harms others with their emotional pain, whether or not they are consciously aware of it.
Passive expression is when we see a person who internalizes their pain and is often the one being harmed by others or themselves.
Permanent healing cannot be achieved as long as we continue to carry our pain with us.
Mental Body
This is where we store the energy of our thoughts and beliefs. The mental body is the one that decides what you will believe about life. These beliefs are shaped in response to what the emotional body has experienced and the memories it carries. This layer of consciousness often acts as the protector when it perceives a threat. This protection happens through the limiting beliefs that are formed.
With healing and transformation, the protector will feel safe enough to shift to the role of director.
For example: let’s say that you have not had success in relationships and carry sadness, anger, loneliness, and other painful emotions. Eventually, the mental body will believe that it needs to protect you from anymore potential pain in the future.
In response, it may create beliefs such as: “No one will ever Love me,” “I should just give up on Love,” or “I will be alone forever.” This may then drive you to stop pursuing or being open to Love and relationships. Although this typically comes with more pain for the emotional body, because it comes at the cost of Love, the mental body is the one that makes the decision to stop you from having any hope.
We know from psychology that the brain feels safer with knowns and feels unsafe with unknowns, until you teach it differently. As long as suffering is present, the brain will always feel the need to protect you from any potential danger or threats in the future. It does this through the limiting beliefs it creates. These limiting beliefs always come at a cost and do not actually protect you.
Part of healing work is reconditioning your brain to feel safe in the unknown so that you are more freed up to take the leaps of faith that lead you to the life you desire.
Together, the emotional and mental bodies make up the elemental body also known as the ego. The ego has the ability to manifest beauty and harmony in your life when these bodies work together. In their unaware and suffering state, they work against each other and create chaos and pain. Think of these two as the soul’s representatives on Earth. When they are out of alignment, holes are created in the etheric body, creating a leakage of energy from the physical body, allowing dis-ease to manifest.
“I” Awareness
This layer is essentially your temporary personality that is listening right now. The awareness here is typically limited to the mental, emotional and physical bodies until healing, transformation and awakening happens. This personality has good intentions, but without spiritual awareness, is the one to sabotage our lives.
The “I” awareness is the bridge between the spiritual system and the physical and elemental/ego system of your consciousness.
When suffering is present, this is the part of you that blocks the flow of Divine life force energy from Source to the mental, emotional, etheric and physical bodies. Healing allows this energy to freely flow helping us maintain a consistent state of well-being.
Higher Self
This layer is like the permanent personality that carries all of the wisdom of your soul. This is the one who carries the awareness of all your past lives, personalities and experiences as well as your potential. The Higher Self is the one that brings Spirit into matter through you when the “I” awareness allows it to. This is the part of you that is always trying to direct you with purpose and inspiration. It is the one always sharing whispers of hope and possibility.
Cultivating a conscious relationship with your Higher Self gives you a permanent guide to help you navigate through life with clarity.
Spirit
This layer is the Divine Source energy that is eternally flowing to each of us to support our journeys. Some refer to this layer as God or Universe. They are all different names for Divine consciousness.
When the higher self and “I” awareness are in alignment, Spirit can flow into the entire body system, freely. This is our ultimate goal for lasting well-being. This essence is always trying to feed and energize the etheric body for the benefit of the physical body.
Pain and suffering creates more density in our consciousness, which makes it harder for Spirit energy to flow into our whole body system. As long as you are consumed by feelings and beliefs of unworthiness, you will block the full flow of Spirit energy that is available to each of us. Life flows better for us all when we have the help of the Universe.
——————
Divine consciousness lives in a constant state of expansion. We are each beings of divinity, here to bring Spirit into matter, assisting in the expansion of this eternal consciousness in our own unique expression.
Think of Spirit as a tree. Each soul is a seedling blowing in the wind that it sheds to expand the forest. Throughout the evolution of our individual consciousness, we eventually become the tree that grows a new forest, releasing our own seedlings. This rippling effect continues for eternity in some form or another for the purpose of expanding consciousness.
