Let’s talk about why HEALING is so important.
If you look in your life, your community and the world, I am sure you are able to see more than a few people in pain. Some of those people may even be causing harm to themselves and/or others.
If we look at our political landscape, there is clearly a lot of hate and pain happening. We’ve all heard the age-old adage, “hurt people, hurt people.” This truth of this is clearer than it has ever been.
Have you ever wondered how a person can lack so much empathy and compassion for others?
Pain and trauma changes people when they don’t heal. Science has proven that trauma changes the brain. Pain and trauma rewires the brain for what it believes will keep them safe in the future.
For example: a free-spirited child who grew up in a home with parents with no patience may have continuously been punished for being too much. That child could have learned to believe that being their authentic self got them punished. Their response to this could have been to make themselves shrink so that they could prevent future punishment. This could have turned them into a people pleaser who lives in constant anticipation of other’s behaviors.
When a person constantly holds in their energy like this, it freezes inside of them. Someone living with this much suppressed energy can live with a high amount of anxiety. This anxiety can eat them from the inside out, preventing them from living a life of joy and peace. This anxiety can also spill out of them onto everyone around them making others perceive them as difficult to be around, leading to a life of loneliness and disconnection.
In this example, the parents that lacked patience and constantly punished their child are hurt people hurting people. They too have trauma that is unhealed that they then projected onto their children. This is how generational trauma happens.
There are so many more examples that I could share here. I imagine that all of you reading this can think of at least one example of how your own pain and trauma reshaped you. Or, maybe you know someone who experienced trauma that reshaped them.
This is why healing is so important. The cycles perpetuate until someone(s) in the family system begins to heal and break the patterns.
Most of these hurt people are so unaware of how their own pain is causing them to hurt others. This is what trauma does to the brain. Remember, it is not so easy for a hurt person to break these cycles overnight.
A hurt person cannot become a healed person until they do their healing work.
This is not an easy or quick process. But, it is possible for every person. The great thing about there being so many different paths to healing is that not any one process or modality will work for every person. In fact, most people need multiple different processes and modalities with multiple different people over time. This really depends on the severity of the trauma that occurred. I recommend exploring the healing paths that you feel called to as you feel called to them. Trust that feeling as a signal guiding to where you need to be.
The more I have done my own healing work, the more compassion, empathy, understanding and forgiveness I have been able to find for the hurt people in my life who hurt me.
My hope for all of you as you read this is for you to find greater compassion and empathy for yourself and all of the hurt parts of you.
I would even stretch that further and hope that someday, you can find compassion and empathy for those that have hurt you. This does not mean that you have to give them space in your life.
It just means that someday you realize the hatred, anger, sadness and resentment that you still hold for those who hurt you, is hurting you, not them.
You might be reading this and thinking, “Matt, you can fuck right off with that noise.” I totally get that. When you live so long with your pain, you will feel justified in it. For many of you, your pain is something that has become so familiar that you have come to believe it keeps you safe.
The brain often misperceives familiar as safe. This is because your brain has figured out how to adapt to life with it. But, babe, how is that working for you? I can assure you that it is not. It is sabotaging you and the magical life that is possible and available to you.
Many people see the world as full of evil and bad people. I see the world as full of people in pain and so consumed in it that they can’t see clearly beyond it. It is impossible for me not to have empathy and compassion for these people when I look at them this way.
This is why I am so committed to my work as a healer. I will do whatever it takes to help as many as I can to find healing in this lifetime.
Of course, I will do that without sacrificing myself in the process because self-sacrifice is a trauma response. I tossed that reminder in there because I know so many of us struggle with sacrificing ourselves in order to help others.
This idea of seeing the people that are often perceived as evil or bad as hurting and in pain has not always been easy for me. When I have a hard time making that shift, my practice is to imagine that person as their hurt inner child. I will visualize their child self in pain which always tugs at my heart. No matter how awful they are, there is a wounded little child living inside of them who believes they are keeping themselves safe, no matter how distorted that view of safety might be.
Remember, trauma is more than just what happens to a person. It is how that person perceived and related to what happened to them. Something that may not seem like a big deal to you could have been the most painful, devastating and traumatic thing to another person. It is important that we do not judge another person’s trauma just because we may not understand it.
On top of all of this, some of us carry trauma into this current life from our past lives. I call this Karmic Trauma. I don’t want to overwhelm you with more information than I already have so more on this in a future newsletter.
The moral of the story y’all is that people are far more complex than just good or bad. In my opinion, the only thing that will change the world for the better is for all of us to focus on HEALING in our individual lives. The more we each focus on healing, the more that healed energy flows out into the collective.
Want your life or the world to get better? HEAL.
Focusing on your healing now is the most efficient thing you can do for your life in the long run.
Know that I am always holding space for the healing of each of you, all of us incarnated on this earth and all of the souls in the spirit world who have yet to heal. Because yes, we do carry our pain with us into the afterlife and on to the next life after that until we HEAL. It does not magically go away when we die.
If healing is something that you are seeking help in, I got you. Know that healing work with me will always be focused on addressing the root causes and finding solutions to the problems in a practical and tangible way.
Remember, healing is possible for everyone.
